St John’s College is a world-class Anglican School situated on a magnificent campus in Houghton, Johannesburg, offering quality education from Pre-Primary to Post-Matric. The school has an outstanding academic record and an excellent reputation in sport, music, drama, art and debating.
We are seeking to appoint a Visual Arts Teacher to teach in the Creative Arts and FET phase of the Visual Arts department. The successful candidate will not simply teach, but act as a creative mentor, guiding the students through the conceptual rigour of the IEB Practical Assessment Tasks (PATs), and delivering an academically challenging Visual Culture Studies (theory) curriculum. The role involves teaching students from Remove to UV (Grades 8–12).
As a collaborative member of the Creative Arts Department, the successful candidate will contribute positively to a supportive and innovative team environment, helping to create a culture where every student feels challenged to achieve their full potential.
Why you will love teaching at St John’s
- Working alongside passionate colleagues who care about students and each other.
- Thrive in a collaborative family of creative arts teachers.
- Be embedded in a deeply rooted culture of reflection and professional development.
- Have access to technology to enhance the educational experience in the classroom.
- Competitive remuneration package.
What you will do
As theVisual Arts Teacher, you will carry a distinct set of regulatory, pedagogical, and administrative responsibilities across the Creative Arts and FET phases. In the IEB context, the Visual Arts teacher is directly integrated into the assessment process as an internal assessor, curator, and quality-assurance agent.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing Creative Arts projects, School-Based Assessment (SBA), and the Practical Assessment Task (PAT), ensuring that learners are appropriately guided through all stages of the process. As the PAT constitutes a significant component of the final promotion mark, the continuous management and oversight of this process is critical.
- Delivering the Visual Arts curriculum and assessing Visual Culture Studies (VCS), a highly academic theory component that requires advanced critical thinking, analysis, and engagement with visual and cultural contexts.
- Undertaking moderation and standardisation responsibilities to ensure the integrity, consistency, and accuracy of internal assessment marks. As internal practical marks form a substantial portion of the final NSC result, the teacher plays a key role in maintaining assessment standards and quality assurance.
- Facilitating and mentoring learners throughout the creative process, providing guidance from the interpretation of a brief through to the completion of practical work. This role requires balancing structured administrative and assessment requirements with opportunities for individual self-expression and creative development.
- Serving as an internal assessor, curator, and quality-assurance agent, ensuring that learner work, assessment practices, and portfolio requirements meet IEB standards and regulatory expectations.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor Degree of Fine Art (BFA), BA in Visual Arts, or BA in Fine Arts.
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior Phase and FET Teaching. The PGCE must specifically list Visual Arts (or Creative Arts) as teaching methodology/subject specialization.
