HEAD OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Founded in 1896 and set in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Michaelhouse is a leading Anglican Independent senior Boarding School for boys from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
Michaelhouse is looking for an experienced and dynamic Head of Sports Medicine to provide strategic and operational leadership across our Wellness division (including the San, our on-campus medical clinic) and our High-Performance Centre (HPC), on a Permanent basis from January 2027. The successful candidate will oversee the full continuum of care for our boys – from medical treatment and injury management through to conditioning, rehabilitation and performance development – leading a multi-disciplinary team of medical, wellness and sport science professionals.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE:
- Leadership, management and operational oversight of the San (the school’s on-site medical clinic), including coordinating the School Doctor, physiotherapist, biokineticist and nursing staff
- Driving the High-Performance Centre’s programmes across every sporting code, including strength and conditioning, sport science and athlete monitoring
- Development and oversight of integrated injury-prevention, rehabilitation and return-to-play programmes including communication and follow-ups with Doctors and specialists
- Medical care and cover at sporting events, including concussion protocols and emergency planning
- Injury screening across sporting codes, and oversight of school injury and medical insurance claims
- Management of the Wellness and HPC budgets, staff and resources
- Close collaboration with coaches, the Human Kinetics Department and the School’s pastoral structures
FULL INVOLVEMENT IN ALL ASPECTS OF SCHOOL LIFE IS EXPECTED, INCLUDING:
- Pastoral care, for example: boarding house/tutoring and escort duties etc.
- Building strong relationships with boys, staff, coaches and parents
- Representing the School at sporting and medical events as required
- Liaising with staff, boys and parents
REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and current HPCSA registration as a Physiotherapist or Sports Physician (or an equivalent recognised clinical qualification)
- A minimum of 10 years’ relevant post-qualification experience, including proven experience of leading and managing a staff team
- Strong knowledge of strength and conditioning, sport science and injury rehabilitation principles
- A sound working knowledge of best practice in school-based health, wellness and sports-medicine services, including clinical governance and service standards
- Experience managing a multi-disciplinary medical/performance team
- Prior experience in a school or high-performance sporting environment would be advantageous
- Alignment with the Christian values and ethos of the school
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- A clear criminal record, together with clearance against the National Child Protection Register and the National Register for Sex Offenders
- A valid Code B driver’s license
