MARITZBURG COLLEGE — DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY
To assume duty Term 1 2027
Maritzburg College, one of the leading boys’ schools in South Africa, has an excellent reputation for its academic, sporting, cultural and leadership programmes. The Governing Body invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the following post.
The successful incumbent will be responsible for driving and overseeing the hockey programme by providing strategic direction to ensure the school maintains its position as one of the leading hockey schools in the country. The incumbent will be responsible for player and coach development, with a focus on improving the technical, tactical and mental abilities of players and coaches. This is a non-teaching, co-curricular appointment.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop the College hockey programme and its playing philosophy.
- Coach and develop the Maritzburg College 1st XI.
- Drive a clear and connected U14–1st XI player development pathway.
- Develop and mentor hockey coaches across all teams.
- Lead high-performance player development and year-round hockey programmes.
- Identify and attract talented hockey players to College.
- Develop relationships with schools, academies, clubs, universities and hockey structures.
- Provide hockey advisory and developmental in helping our feeder primary schools.
- Support players with pastoral development and preparation for university and life beyond College.
- Develop relationships with existing and potential sponsors and identify opportunities to support the growth of College hockey.
The successful candidate will have:
- Significant hockey playing and/or coaching experience.
- Experience in high-performance hockey and player development.
- Proven leadership and the ability to develop coaches and players.
- A strong understanding of the school hockey environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Appropriate hockey coaching qualifications.
- A relevant tertiary qualification.
Experience in provincial, university or other high-performance hockey environments will be advantageous.
