DESIGN TEACHER

St Andrew’s College and The Diocesan School for Girls in Makhanda (Grahamstown) invite applications for a dynamic and innovative Design teacher to join their team. The role aims to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving through design education, while contributing to a shared Design and Technology centre that supports both schools.

The successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in delivering a forward-thinking curriculum, supporting practical studio-based learning, and contributing to the broader co-curricular life of both schools.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach Design (Grades 9–12) and Design & Technology (Grades 4–8), as required across the two schools.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, innovative lessons that foster creativity, design thinking, and technical skills.
  • Contribute to the development of a cohesive and progressive Design & Technology curriculum across both schools.
  • Support and manage practical studio environments, ensuring safe and effective use of equipment and materials.
  • Facilitate after-school studio access, clubs, and enrichment opportunities within the D&T centre.
  • Assist in the organisation of exhibitions, showcases, and portfolio development.
  • Integrate digital design tools and emerging technologies into teaching and learning.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across both schools to ensure alignment and effective resource sharing.
  • Participate in the broader life of the schools, including extramural activities (e.g. sport, cultural, or service programmes).
  • Uphold and contribute to the values, ethos, and transformation goals of both institutions.
  • Demonstrate willingness to support the Christian ethos of the schools and to be actively involved in chapel services.

Please note that consideration will only be given to candidates with:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (minimum: degree in Design, Technology, or a related field; PGCE or BEd preferred).
  • SACE registration.
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant teaching experience in Design and/or Design & Technology, preferably across a range of grades (advantageous).
  • Practical and/or teaching experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Fashion Design and sewing/textiles
    • Product Design and manufacture
    • Visual Communication Design
    • Woodwork and technical drawing
  • Competence in digital design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and 3D design software (e.g. SketchUp or similar).
  • An understanding of current trends in design education and a willingness to innovate.
  • An understanding of and a willingness to commit to growing the unique partnership between The Diocesan School for Girls and St Andrew’s College.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a shared departmental structure.
  • A willingness to contribute to after-hours programmes and the co-curricular life of the schools.
