Situated in the heart of the southern suburbs of Cape Town, Michael Oak Waldorf School is a beautiful small school community with children from nursery to matric. Michael Oak seeks to awaken the whole child towards creative responsibility and to develop confident, balanced individuals empowered to work with the challenges of today and tomorrow.

We are seeking a candidate for the position of:

HANDWORK TEACHER FOR GRADES 1-8

Full-time position to begin January 2027

Our preferred candidate will be passionate about teaching Handwork to children from age 6 to 14, and will bring both craft and creativity to the classroom, along with the organisational skill to plan a coherent thread of work from Grade 1 through to Grade 8.

The ideal candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Formal teaching qualification, with proven skill and experience across a range of handwork techniques, such as knitting, crochet, sewing, felting and needlecraft.
  • SACE registration
  • Interest in and willingness to learn about Waldorf pedagogy, and an understanding of how Handwork builds a child's will, coordination and concentration alongside their hands.
  • Willingness to work with children at different ages, adapting teaching style, technique and pace of work to Waldorf methodology and each year of the child's development.
  • Creativity and proficiency in a range of crafts, with the organisational skill to sequence and prepare lessons and materials for several classes across the week.
  • Caring and enthusiastic, with a love of teaching groups of children and guiding them to create and work confidently with their hands.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently without formal supervision.

Preference will be given to candidates who have completed Waldorf training and / or those who have previous experience teaching at a Waldorf school.
