St John’s Preparatory forms part of St John’s College and offers an excellent academic, social and emotional curriculum which is enriched with music, art, drama, technology and sport. The Prep caters to boys from Grades 3 to 7 and has an excellent record in preparing them for their College careers.

We seek to appoint a suitably qualified Librarian responsible for the day-to-day running of the Library. The Librarian will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Prep Library.

Main Purpose of the Role

  • Develop and ensure the Library is a place where students can extend their creativity and imaginations; where they want to come to learn, read, study and borrow resources
  • To ensure the Library is responsive to the needs of the boys in the fast-changing modern world incorporating information technology, promoting the use of appropriate and relevant IT applications to support teaching and learning
  • Create and maintain a visually and intellectually stimulating learning environment which supports and enhances the delivery of the school’s educational programmes.
  • To provide innovative ideas and initiatives to promote and inspire a love of literacy amongst the boys, and ensure this is embodied within the aims and values of the school
  • To ensure the Library plays a central role in the academic life of the school

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the archiving, selection, acquisition, organisation, promotion and maintenance of books and non-book resources in the library
  • Develop and implement a Library policy which reflects the educational aims and objectives of the Prep School
  • Plan and oversee a programme for monitoring and evaluating the services and performance of the Library
  • Support the Additional Language Departments by providing resources to support literacy in isiZulu, Afrikaans and SeSotho.
  • Prepare and manage the Prep library budget

Minimum Requirements:

Matric, B Bibl or a Post-Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Services, with the following knowledge and skills:

  • Information Technology
  • Google Suite
  • Library Management System experience
  • 5+ years Library experience in a school environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Overdrive experience would be advantageous
  • All staff are required to have a police clearance certificate
