Tafelberg School, Bothasig, Cape Town is looking for a learner facilitator 

Starting date: 9 July 2024 – 31 December 2024

We're in search of a school facilitator committed to providing dedicated support. The facilitator will be responsible for assisting a Gr 1 boy during his school day. The perfect fit for this role would be an individual who is open-minded, empathetic, and non-judgmental. Someone who has a low arousal temperament and handles situations calmly while fostering a supportive environment.

Main Purpose of the job:

To attend school with the child and support him during classroom activities as well as on the playground. A suitable candidate would be interested in growing their understanding of the child’s specific developmental challenges and related barriers. The facilitator will find suitable ways in which to support these specific needs to encourage learning and development at school. A special interest and passion to be a secure, long-term source of support to a neuro divergent individual is of the utmost importance.

Job Objectives:

  • To collaborate with a team to support the child’s needs.
  • Build a trusting relationship with the child.
  • Act as a bridge of communication between the teacher, child, and parents.
  • Encourage and facilitate social engagements with peers at school
  • Provide support and scaffolding for his regulation needs at school (lessening any uncertainty and       possible triggers).
  • Accommodate and alleviate his sensory sensitivities
  • Redirect his attention to tasks and minimise distractions
  • Assisting with breaking down tasks and chunking information as and when needed during school time.
  • Repeat instructions in a way that he can understand
  • Integrate supportive tools into the learning environment as advised by his therapists.

General Requirements:

  • Reliable transport
  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading and writing)
  • Punctual and reliable

Job Related work experience:

  • Previous experience working with Autism
  • Teaching experience - advantageous

Job Related Knowledge:

  • Knowledge/ Previous training in Autism is essential

Job Related Skills:

  • Ability to minimize stress and anxiety for the child by utilizing a low-arousal approach
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Relationship building skills
  • A patient and calm demeanour is essential

Working hours:

Monday – Friday

7:30 - 13:30
