FOUNDATION PHASE TEACHING INTERN

TEACHING INTERN: Grade 1 - 3
January – December 2026
Somerset House invites young, enthusiastic, hardworking students who are currently, or intending to, study education part-time, through a recognised tertiary institution, to apply for a one-year internship position. This will be a Teaching Internship for the remainder of 2026 in which the intern will be required to engage in the daily life of the school. The successful candidate will need to be committed to a full school day, which will include observation, preparation and presentation of lessons, break duties and involvement in the school extra-curricular programme. In addition, the intern will need to complete all university assignments and course work throughout the year. Having your own transportation would be advantageous.
Selection Criteria:
- Matric Certificate with a Bachelor's Pass.
- Experience in extra-curricular activities with children
- Passion and aptitude for working with young children.
- Current enrolment in a B-ed Degree (Foundation Phase) or has applied to do a B-ed (Foundation Phase) Degree for 2026 at a tertiary institution - part-time or distance learning institutions only.
- Newly qualified teachers may also apply.
- Must be willing to take guidance and instruction from teachers.
- It will be a requirement to apply for Police, Sexual Offenders Register and Child Protection Act clearances.
Responsibilities:
- Classroom assistance, observation, preparation and presentation of lessons.
- General academic duties including administration, assisting with marking and invigilation.
- General duties and involvement in the school extra-curricular programme.

The ideal candidate will be an organised, enthusiastic and active member of the teaching body, and suited to teaching in an independent, co-educational, community minded stand-alone preparatory school.
Accommodation in a shared living space on campus is available as part of the package if required.
