St John’s College is a world-class Christian, African school situated on a historic campus in Houghton, Johannesburg, offering quality education from Nursery School to Sixth Form. The school has an outstanding academic record and has a fine reputation in sports, music, drama and debating.

We are seeking to appoint a Deputy Head: Academics who can build on the outstanding work of the outgoing post holder, taking ownership for a culture of excellent learning and teaching throughout the College within the framework of a broad, ambitious and forward-thinking curricular offering. The Deputy Head Academic will be a dynamic leader in the academic field and an active participant on the College Executive Team, and as such will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the College. The successful candidate will be an important voice in the College, generating new and interesting ideas and able to strategically and intelligently plan for the students to be future fit.

The Deputy Head: Academics is specifically responsible for all aspects of the academic life of the College and ensuring that it remains true to its founding principles of being ambitious and forward-thinking. Fronting the Heads of Department team and the teaching staff that deliver on an outstanding and value-added curriculum is a fundamental part of this role, as is curriculum development and innovation, the delivery of a digitally-rich educational strategy, regular curriculum review and oversight of the academic progress of students.. They will be adept at mentoring and coaching individual colleagues, ensuring the high academic delivery in the classroom and teaching spaces.

The Deputy Head: Academics will be expected to teach in one of the academic subjects offered by the College. Subject expertise and teaching preferences should be made clear in the application and supporting statement. There is no preferred subject specialism envisaged for the role.

The Deputy Head: Academics portfolio is dynamic, and a willingness to embrace new challenges and lead and implement new initiatives, in addition to their core role, is essential.

The criteria below is indicative of the role’s envisaged requirements but will be subject to annual review dependent on the needs of the school and the skills, experience, and career ambitions of the postholder.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • The academic and intellectual credentials to command the respect of the St John’s community.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, and PGCE.
  • A postgraduate qualification is preferable.
  • At least 10 years’ experience as a teacher, some of which as a head of an academic department.
  • SACE registered.
  • Experience in school leadership
  • Deep understanding, gained through direct experience of the challenges and demands of leadership in a school environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and leading high performing teams.

Skills and Knowledge

  • An understanding of, and ability to articulate and formulate into strategic vision, current developments in pedagogical thinking and research.
  • A track record of improving teaching excellence through robust and adaptable forms of mentoring, coaching, and scrutiny.
  • A strong understanding of the role of technology in enhancing teaching and learning.
  • A track record of improving student attainment.
  • A deep understanding of IEB and A level requirements.
  • First-class communication skills, with the manner, gravitas, and personal authority to act as a compelling ambassador for St John’s College.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire the whole school community in the pursuit of excellence.
  • An intellectual enthusiasm for wider educational developments, particularly in relation to developments in technology supporting academic outcomes and effective teaching and learning.
